Get Prepped for the Big Month
Let's face it: social media is such a predominant part of our lives that to take a sabbatical will be a little impactful. [For those of you playing along in real-time, we will begin our social media detox on November 1, 2020.] To ensure we're all ready for our month-long break, here are a few helpful tips to get us set for success:
1. Decide where you're cutting back. If you haven't already, figure out from which social media platform(s) you're taking a hiatus. Here's a hint: if you check it during the day, consider cutting it. With some platforms, you may have the option to temporarily deactivate your account to keep your "itch" for feed-checking at bay. *DISCLAIMER: If you choose to use any of the below methods for deactivating your account, you do so at your own risk. Take special care to ensure that you can restore your account when you'd like.*
- How to deactivate Facebook
- It looks like if you try to deactivate your Twitter account, it may be deleted within 30 days. Use this option with extreme caution. Consider just removing the app from your phone.
- What happens when you temporarily deactivate Instagram?
2. Turn off notifications. Account deactivations can be tricky. For a safer alternative, uninstall the app(s) from your phone, or turn off notifications via your phone's Settings menu. You're not tempted to check your phone as much if you're not getting that pesky chime!
3. Grab a journal. Find a way that works for you, be it a notebook or your laptop, and write down your goals. Which platforms are you pausing? Are there any other tech-related goals you'd like to achieve? How do you feel about it? Then, as the month progresses, check in with your journal. Share your thoughts as you go!
4. Make like an airport and announce your departure. Share a short status update to let everyone know that you'll be taking a social media break for a little while. Feel free to include other ways that people can contact you (bonus: Facebook Messenger will still work even if you deactivate your account!), but do not share personal information (email address, phone number, address, etc.) on your post. Send it only to those you trust via a private direct message.
5. Stay connected. This isn't a time to be slacking off on interpersonal communication. Quite the opposite; this should enhance your relationships! While you'll stop scrolling mindlessly through your feed, keep your group chats open, text your friend just because, or (gasp!) call someone to say hello. You might even discover the lost art of letter writing and getting fun mail! A great side effect of distancing yourself from social media is dedicating yourself to more intentional, meaningful communication with friends and family.
You've got this, guys. I'll check in one more time before we take the plunge!
